Chapter Nine

Calling guys was never my thing. It makes my palms sweaty and my heart race. But then again, everything about Jackson and Dane makes my palms sweaty and my heart race.

This was different though. My life had changed because of these guys, and even though I’d basically left them hanging, with no clear answer to their questions, I couldn’t see living my life without them. If they wanted to share, then I’d learn to live with that. It really didn’t seem like all that much of a sacrifice when I got right down to thinking about it. It was just…different.

I punched in the number to the cabin. It didn’t seem right to call either one or the other since this was a group thing. Despite my butterflies, I laughed. A group thing…Sadie is part of a group thing.

“Hello?”

Dane answered the phone, and for a second I just let the sound of his voice wash over me. “Hey. It’s me.”

“Sadie. Hey…” His voice went gentle, as if too many words, spoken too loudly, might be the wrong thing to do. “Hey…”

“Is Jackson there? Can I talk to both of you?”

“Oh, yeah. Just a minute.” There was a muffled bellow, then some other noise, and then the sound echoed and faded for a minute. I must be on speakerphone.

“Sadie? Hi, it’s Jackson.”

“And Dane.”

“Okay, hi. I’m glad you’re both there. I wanted to apologize for the other night…”

There were two men suddenly telling me I didn’t need to apologize, that it was alright, everything was okay, fine…

“Hey…guys?” There was quiet on the other end. “I wanted to tell you that I’ve thought about what we talked about…what you’re—proposing, I guess would be the word.” Proposing? No, wrong word… “I mean, what you suggested.” Better…sort of.

I took a big breath. “I’m saying it’s okay. Whatever you guys said, I’m okay with it.”

There was silence, this time of the stunned variety. Then there were two men laughing, telling me how great this was, how happy they were, hoping I was just as happy. I let them have their moment of relief, smiling at their enthusiasm.

“Okay…well, you know, that’s…”

“Hey, sorry. We’re just…” I could hear the smile in Jackson’s voice.

Dane cut him off. “We’re just happy you understand.”

“Well, I can’t say I really understand. But I’m willing to give this a try. You guys…both of you…I mean, this is probably the happiest I’ve been in a long time. I don’t want that to go away, just because this relationship…relationships…I’m not sure what this is. But I want things to go on.”

There was more laughter, more talking over each other. Finally, Dane was the only one talking. “Sadie, we wanted to ask you if you’d like to go camping with us…both of us…this weekend. It’s supposed to be the last really good weekend of warm weather, and we’d like to take you out to a place that’s kind of special to us. Maybe just an overnight.”

“Camping?” Camping? Sleep-in-the-woods camping? Pee-in-the-woods camping. I hadn’t been since I was a kid.
